The prototype steps (pictured) have been completed and are functioning well. Finished shepherd huts will be shipped with steps made out of Iroko wood. Grown on the tropical west coast of Africa, Iroko is naturally rot and insect resistant and has good weathering properties. Iroko starts out light in color, but darkens as it ages. It is also used as a substitute for Teak.
We have deliberately decided to launch this website before the completion of the prototype shepherd hut because of the 4-6 week lead time before the first custom hut would be seriously started. That would be a time of very little shop work and delay the possibility of getting an early Spring delivery of that hut. Subsequent hut orders would probably have an overlap with the construction and delivery of previous huts and not be a cause for construction delays.
We’re currently working with PT Foundry to make the wheel hubs about 1″ wider to allow for improved protection for the wheel bearings. Starting this process now now will also avoid the possibility of having a delay in the next hut construction.
